City on a Hill

I find it powerfully striking that the Jerusalem temple was built on a mount. Especially in light of Jesus’ commission to us in Mark 5:14

You are the light of the world. A city on the hill can not be hidden.

The implication here is that God’s meeting place was a light to the world. His word incarnated and living in us has the same expectations as the ancient temple. It is the source of God’s divine word into our world. And it can not be hidden. We are charged with the same mission as were the prophets and the priests.

As we gather in towns across the world, the Body of Christ is the new Temple. We are a city within a city.

  1. Amen. I love how Paul says the Corinthians: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” We are the light of the world, the Temple of the Holy Ghost, and we have a responsibility to keep that light (our witness) burning bright by keeping our body (temple) pure, lest we quench that light. Man, I think I am going to bounch off this post! Keep writing, and thanks for the encouragement on my site!
